The thing I don’t get…

Thursday, May 19th, 2005

..right, is that people seem to think that by saying “Well, at least it was better than the first two” this somehow confirms that it’s a great film.

I really could go on (and on) about all things this movie, but the one thing I will say is that I think through a combination of bad writing, bad direction and bad acting (oh, and just because someone acts well in one film does not mean they act well in all films, and I will allow for some truly atrocious material that the actors were given) the film totally and untterly failed to convey why Anakin turned to the Dark Side. And this was the central narrative of the entire movie, the entire first three movies even, so if it failed to do this, in essence, it failed full stop.

Though it was very pretty. Very pretty.

Update: Hmm, the above is too strong. I meant to say that it failed to be the great movie that I guess I was hoping it was going to be. Still, I’ll see it again, which is more than I can say for the first two. And if anyone asks, I think I’ve settled on 3 stars out of 5.

Come see it, you know you want to

So, the show’s begun and is now at its half way point. It really is damn good, and while I’m not entirely sure how it came together at the end to be this way (oh the pain of the production week), I can say with confidence that pretty much anyone seeing it will think that it’s rather grand. If my Dad thinks it was good, then so should you all! (Warning: the purchase of a programme is obligatory prior to the show in order to understand who the hell the people on the stage are, and what their relationships to each other might be.) (This really is quite important.)

However, problems are arising in that our marketing hasn’t been the most fantastic (mea culpa here, largely) and tickets are refusing to fly off the shelf. Even the half price tickets are staying put in a rather annoying fashion.

And so this is where I put the call out to one and all to not only come see the show, but to bring your friends (and theirs) along as well. You’ll love it, they’ll love it… and the cast will love you for it. They’ve all done a fantastic job (come see Mel drunk and disorderly, Si foppish and easily led) and deserve bigger audiences than they’re getting.

Watch the Press on Monday for the review if you don’t believe what I’m saying above!

Update: And here is said Press Review.

“…for the rich cavalcade of ideas it presented, this was one of the most effective productions seen at the Ngaio Marsh for a long time. …A feast for the eye and ear…”

(It’s so much fun only paraphrasing the good bits…)
